A window to democracy will close in April. After that, Illinois will see either a future in which state government is responsive and accountable to the people – or else we will have to accept dysfunction and allow the politically connected keep calling the shots. Much will depend on your response to this “help wanted” ad:

HELP WANTED: Citizens who love democracy, We need them in Lake County, DuPage County, Kane County, McHenry County, Will County, Rockford, Rock Island, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, Springfield, Decatur, Madison County, St. Clair County, Effingham, Mt. Vernon, and Carbondale-Marion, and in the City of Chicago and in suburban Cook County. Applicants from other areas are more than welcome, too.

Position Title: IDP Campaign Deputy. [The IDP coordinates a campaign to complement the efforts of the Illinois Parent Teacher Association, the League of Women Voters of Illinois, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Illinois and the Illinois Green Party, who want to amend the Illinois Constitution.]

Duties: Lend your voice to the cause of democracy at meetings in your area; serve as media contact; facilitate events in your community. [Click Here for more details on the duties.] Hours: one to five hours per week, through April 30. Qualifications: You need only Internet access, through which you will receive training, meet co-workers in your area, learn about assignments you can choose from, and obtain the resources to carry them out.

Compensation: You'll earn recognition as a hero in your community and throughout the state. You will earn the undying gratitude of thousands of citizens. You will be able, for the rest of your life, to look back to a moment in history when you helped rescue democracy itself in Illinois. [That's right, there's no money involved. Your pay will be exactly the same as everyone else's in this project to restore democracy in Illinois.]
