PROJECT FOR A NEW AMERICAN CENTURY
Established in the spring of 1997 and funded largely by the energy and arms industries, the Project for the New American Century was founded as the neoconservative think tank whose stated goal was to usher in a “new American century”. Having won the cold war and no military threat to speak of, this group of ideologues created a blueprint for the future whose agenda was to capitalize upon our surplus of military forces and funds and forcing American hegemony and corporate privatization throughout the world. Their goals: 1) Increase an already enormous military budget at the expense of domestic social programs 2) Toppling of regimes resistant to our corporate interests 3) Forcing democracy at the barrel of a gun in regions that have no history of the democratic process 4) Replacing the UN’s role of preserving and extending international order

rinkeby photos – so many Swedish friends said stay AWAY from Rinkeby! That’s where all the immigrants are and there is so much crime there! And I was like is that NOT a reason to go visit? Hello after working in the South Bronx and Bed Stuy and loving it, I am always pulled to where the immigrants are – to me that is the soul of a country – you can tell a country’s issues in 5 sec after visiting where the immigrants and low-income people live. So I dedicated a whole day to spend in Rinkeby.
Now looking a these pictures, does this look like the typical projects we see in the US? This looks like luxury living to me! No garbage anymore, planned socializing spaces for children from central playgrounds to bbq areas, open layout of buildings with centralized social spaces for adults, no bars on windows, large windows in each apt and etc. How could this be referred to as the projects other than that this is where all the immigrants in Stockholm live? Ahhh well after much talking to residents of Rinkeby, I understood why this was a true ghetto. Residents here are socially, economically, and geographically isolated from the rest of the city – the white Swedes essentially – they have little economic and social opportunity to gain the necessary social, political and cultural capital to work in Stockholm. Many immigrants who came here as refugees do not have the language skills to even look for jobs. Also, in a highly functioning (not equivalent to efficient) social democracy such as Sweden, the govt does provide basic social provisions to all citizens, but that is different from introducing necessary social networks and tools, such as language or job training, that will empower them to participate in the economy.
After speaking to several immigrants in Rinkeby, I found out that the reason why there is high unemployment (35% compared to national avg of 5.8%) in Rinkeby is because the immigrants don’t get a chance to speak Swedish with other Swedish speakers, and they don’t have the networks to get into job circles because the white swedes all moved out in the 80′s when the immigrants came. People told me that when all the Somalian refugees came in the late 80′s and 90′s scared all the white Swedes away and that is when their schools, jobs opportunities all went downhill. The problem is that you can’t accept refugees without a proper plan for giving them to tools to just as equally participate in society as other Swedes. Who says that there isn’t class in a social democracy! Swedish people will swear up and down they don’t have "class" because they have a social democracy – well I think Pierre Bourdieu wins this war – there is definitely class and I could feel it finally after spending a day in Rinkeby talking to residents.
