Digital technologies and emerging platforms have opened up new methods of reflecting life around the globe. In each episode, Metropolis brings viewers a geographically diverse collection of brief films, all grouped close to a weekly theme. From obesity and the lives of fifteen-year-old girls, to self defense, outcasts and Elvis impersonators, Metropolis presents a new ‘global view’ every week, and exposes the surprising variations and similarities in between men and women and cultures globally. The televised version of Metropolis has been airing in The Netherlands considering that 2008. All short films produced by Metropolis —over 600 in total—are also available globally on the show’s web site, which lately won a special commendation from at the 2009 Prix Europa Awards.

Kel O’Neill (US) &amp Eline Jongsma (NL) have been US correspondents for Metropolis considering that the project’s inception. In addition, they are currently functioning on a new media project entitled Empire, which investigates the legacy of European corporate-colonialism in former Dutch East India Business colonies and trading posts in Asia and Africa.

Missouri State University has been chosen to participate in a project to build an understanding of how technological innovation, particularly social networks, can be employed to engage and empower citizens. eCitizenship – New tools, New methods, New spaces, is the name of the 3-year program. It is led by the center for the research of citizenship and initiated by the American Democracy Project. The 33 participating institutions nationwide will study how social networks support and facilitate civic and political engagement. This research will help to develop a strategy to put together school students for lives of engagement and participation through usage of social networks and other technologies. Representing the eCitizenship project is Dr. Rachelle Durabi, Associate Provost for Student Development and Public Affairs.
